Nakhon Si Thammarat Province
BackGroundNakhon Si Thammarat, the second largest city of the south having the greatest history and background above any other town in the region due to its status as a first grade city contrilling various subjected cities and towns, a place that houses Lord Buddha's relics which is a most important statutory place of the South, being the center of Buddhism during Sivichaya period, is located some 861 kms. by railroad and 780 kms. by highway from Bangkok.
It occupies and area of 9,942.5 square kilometres having high plateau with montains and jungles in the west then sloping down towards the east and becoming basin along the coastline of the Gulf of Thailand. It borders on Surat Thani to the north; Trang, Phatthalung and Songkhla to the south; the Gulf of Thailand to the east; and Krabi to the west. It is asministratively divided into 16 Amphoes and 2 King Amphoes : Muang, Cha - Uat, Chawang, Chian Yai, Hua Sai, Khanom, Lan Saka, Pak Phanang, Phipun, Ron Phibun, Sichon, Tha Sala, Thung Song, Thung Yai, No Bon, Phrommakhiri, King Amphoe Bang Khan and King Amphoe Phannara. There are four important rivers: Tapi, Pak Phanang, Pak Phoon and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Tourist Attractions
Wat Phra Mahathat :Wat Phra Mahathat This is originally an old monastery of Nakhon Si Thammarat, situated in the heart of the city. It is believed to be constructed around A.D.757 during Sivichaya period i compliance with the idea of Mahayana Buddhism School having a lot of important archaeological places such as Vihara Khien, Vihara Khot, Vihara Pho Langka, museum, etc.
Phra Vihara Luang : This big vihara was constructed, next to the Phrathat Pagoda, Sukothai period. It is currently utilized as a main shrine hall but still being called a sanctury or vihara.
Old City Wall : It was firstly construced during the period of Phraya Si Thamma Sokarat and later renewed twice during the periods of King Raesuan and King Narai the Great of Ayuthaya. The total width is 460 meters and 2,230 meters in length.
Phra Buddha Shing Tower : The Towe houses [hra Buddha Sihing Image located near the Provincial Hall (Sala Klang).
Giant Swing and Brahman Temple : The location is in the heart of the city on a side of Ratchadamnoen Road. The current structures are the replica of the ones in Bangkok but smaller in size. They are important places of Brahman Religion which was firstly introduced to Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Phra Suea Muang Shrine : This shrine houses an idol of Theparak, the spirit of the City Pillar of Nakhon Si Thammarat.
: This shrine houses several Indra God idols, cast of bronze, being very valuable antique items.
Sa Lang Dap or Sword Washing Pond : This pond is the place where the slaughter washed his sword after slaughtering Si Prat. It is located at the area behin a girl school named Stree Kalyanee Si Thammarat. It used to be a very spacious place in the old days byt is currently narrow having decorations and water lily growing in the pond.
Sala Pradu Hok : This is pavillion built outside the city wall, used as an accommodation by travellers who could not get into the city in time. Since there were several Travellers staying together, stories, some were ture byt some were not, had been told by those travellers until the folks of that area called such pavillion the "Lying Pavillion" and this is not the original one.
Hat Pak Phanang : This beach is located 28 kms. from Pak Phanang township are having a long white beach over there.
Hat Pak Phaying : This beach is located in the area of Amphoe Tha Sala, 20 kms. from the township area. There is a fishermen village with beautuful beach over there.
Khao Luang National Park Khao Luang National Park : covered the area of 570 sq. km. in Amphoe Lan Saka, Amphoe Muang, Amphoe Phrommakhiri, Amphoe Chawang and Amphoe Phipun. Main attractions in the national park area are waterfalls as followed;
Nam Tok Karom Nam Tok Karom : is about 1,300-1,400 height with 19 levels, located in Amphoe Lan Saka by highway 4,016.9 kms. from the city, turn left to highway 4015 for 15 kms. then walk for another 3 kms.
Nam Tok Phrommalok : is one of the big and high falls with 3 levels. It can be reached by highway 4016 and turn left at km. 21 to highway 4132 for another 4 kms.
Nam Tok Ai Kieo or Nai Kieo : is locataed in Tambon Thonhong, Amphoe Phrommalok Waterfall.
Nam Tok Krung ChingNam Tok Krung Ching : is very big and has many levels. The most beautiful level is called "Nan Fon Saen Ha" Whcih means plenty drops of rain because it looks like rain drops falling down from the cliff.
Krung Ching Waterfall is located about 70 kms. from Provincial City on the highway to Phrommalok and Khao Luang, then walk for another 3.8 kms. Accommodations and food are available.
Other attractions in the national park area are; Nam Tok Tha Pae : Tambon Chang Klang, Amphoe Chawang, Nam Tok Khlong Tha Ngiu Tambon Khlong Tah Ngiu, Tambon Nop Phi Tam, Amphie Tha Sala and a cave callled, Tham Kaeo Surakan on km. 12 highway no. 4015.
Laem Talumphuk : This cape is located in the area of Amphoe Pak Phanang having a long white sand beach, being the place where in Buddhism was introduced during Sivichaya Empire period. The cape was badly destroyed by a tropical zone storm named "Harian" on October 25, 1962.
Other attractions are beaches as : Hat Hin Ngam, Hat Khanom, Hat Sa Bua cave called, Tham Talot which is about 2 kms. south of Amphoe Thung Song, and a waterfall named, Nam Tok Yong located 5 kms from Thung Song.
